Prov. Route 6 north from Winnipeg

While not the JBR, it looks like it might be similar, has anyone tried Route 6 north from Winnipeg? It looks like you can either go on north or go across the north tip of the lake and then go south to Norway House. Any info would be appreciated.

I've never been up to Northern Manitoba along Highway 6 but I have some friends who lived up there. I would suggest looking at this website: http://www.travelmanitoba.com/ to start.

You can take the train up to Churchill on Hudson Bay. The town is famous for its tours for polar bear viewing. Up there you're where the taiga turns into tundra. Also a good place to view the Northern lights.

I think you can drive quite a ways north in Manitoba but only the train will take you to Churchill.

This is eight months old, but I just read about this road they're building from Gillam to Rankin Inlet:

Cost is $1.2B CDN and groundbreaking is expected in 2014. Not sure if I'd be up for that long of a drive on an unpaved road, but it is intriguing.

That would be quite a long drive on that road but I think I would do it if I had the time. Then again, if I had the time where wouldn't I go would be the real question. $1.2B seems a bit low to me judging on the price on other road projects but I take that as the absolutely minimum cost.
