The Rupert River

ALERT - Rupert River Threatened

Enjoy this spectacular river while you can! A deal was negotiated between the Quebec Government and the Grand Council of the Crees of Quebec in October 2001 which would open the way for the Rupert River to be diverted for a hydro-electric power project by Quebec Hydro - the controversial James Bay 2 project.

Some of the Cree people are willing to sell out the Earth for modern "development", while others are seeking to preserve this part of the Earth in its relatively untrammeled state for future generations.

This deal was APPROVED by the Cree in Feb/2002

km 257: Rupert River

I was very moved by this river and its rapids when I was here in July.
And again when I visited in the fall.

Again, I urge you to make sure you stop here and take at least a few minutes to feel the awesome raw wild power of these rapids.

Let it permeate your senses.

Listen, and see if you can hear what the river is saying.

The rest area at Rupert River, with the rapids in the background.

The rapids as seen from the rest area.

The bridge over the Rupert River (and Julie).

Another view of the bridge.
