On my way south I once again stopped at the Rupert River, but this time at a place well upriver from the huge rapids.

In this photo the bridge on the James Bay Road is visible in the distance, just beyond the rapids. Even this far upstream the roar of these enormous rapids can be heard quite clearly!

Very hazy today.

Here's a movie of these rapids looking downstream from a mile (1.6 km) away.
The roar of the rapids can be heard quite clearly.

A view upriver from the same place. Very peaceful and calm, but there is quite a strong current under the surface.
And of course I stopped at the actual Rupert River rapids as well. By now it was raining (again!).

There's lots more movies of the Rupert River in the Rupert River website.
Go have a look!

Km 141 - not raining for the moment, but the air is very smoky. Maybe from a forest fire to the east that might've been started by lightning.
Km 93 - Fall colours going full blast.

I stopped at Mont Laurier to climb part way up. I didn't go to the top, as there were thunderstorms about. But this is still a good distance up!
A lot of smoke in the air ...

This concludes the travelogue. I made my way home via northern Ontario.

The things I treasure most about this region are the solitude and silence. Silence that makes your ears "ring." I found the rest of my journey home to be a little overwhelming because of all the traffic, people, and buildings! I easily get used to the emptiness of the northern lands.

If you want to see more, please go to Virtual Tours and Travelogues on this website. Also visit the Rupert River website for more pictures and movies of this magnificent river. There's a whole LOT more info on this site about this region, including detailed information about traveling up there.

And if you're thinking of taking a trip up here, remember ... don't wait for the weather to be nice, just go. Otherwise you might be waiting forever!
